課程概述

This course provides a critical introduction to twentieth-century English literature. The course is not intended to be a comprehensive survey. Rather, it seeks to examine important developments in thought, culture, and politics through in-depth analysis of literary works. The course will focus on two things, in particular: on the one hand, how writers emerging from this period revolutionize ways of representing the inner truth and outer reality; on the other hand, how literature responds to historical vicissitudes during the twentieth century, including racial clashes, world wars, and the repercussions of imperialism and colonial history.

**The class will be conducted in English.
**Refer to Course Requirements and Grading for the evaluation system of the course.
**For the weekly schedule, go to the Announcements (公告) page on this course's NTU COOL website. Hardcopy syllabus will be provided in the first class.

課程目標
The purpose of the course is not so much to train prospective scholars as to hone your cultural literacy.
課程要求
 Preparation, attendance, and class participation. For specific weeks, preparation prior to the class meeting is required. One absence may be allowed without penalty during the semester. Unexcused absence from five classes will result in a failing grade. (See “Class Policies” for the definition of “unexcused absence.”)

 In-class responses (in lieu of midterm exam). Written responses to be produced and submitted in class, for materials from Weeks 1-11. You are to answer essay questions raised by the instructor in response to key points covered in the lecture. You will likely produce five to six responses altogether, four of which you may select for grading. (NOTE: Even for a week when prior preparation is not required, you may still be asked to write a response in class.)

 Final exam. In-class written exam, for materials from Weeks 12-15.

 “Cultural Literacy” project. This assignment is meant to help you gain additional knowledge about the twentieth-century English-speaking world through movies and TV dramas. Watch a movie or drama series on your own, following the instructor’s recommendations (see syllabus), and write a 300-word response. This is due on NTU COOL no later than Sunday, April 21, 11:00 p.m.
